Stuart's Reception Theory suggests that media texts are encoded and decoded. The producer of a text encodes messages and values into their work and the reader decodes them in one of four ways;

Preferred reading ~ the reading matches the producer's intent.

Negotiated reading ~ the reader can see both readings and lays between.

Opposition reading ~ the reader disagree's with the text.

Aberrant reading ~ the reader doesn't understand the content.
